Ingredients
For the Rolls:
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
For the Sauce:
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Cabbage:
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage.
- Place the cabbage in the boiling water and cook for about 5 minutes. Carefully peel off the outer leaves as they become pliable. Continue until you have 12-15 large leaves. Set aside to cool.
- Prepare the Filling:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and dried thyme. Mix until well combined.
- Prepare the Sauce:
- In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
- Assemble the Rolls:
- Lay a cabbage leaf flat on a cutting board. Place about 2-3 tablespoons of the meat mixture in the center of the leaf.
- Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling and roll up tightly from the stem end to the outer edge. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
- Bake the Rolls:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce in the bottom of a large baking dish.
- Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish. Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the top of the rolls.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the meat is cooked through.
- Serve:
- Let the cabbage rolls cool slightly before serving. Enjoy hot, with extra sauce spooned over the top.
