Ingredients

For the Rolls:

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

For the Sauce:

  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cabbage:
    • Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage.
    • Place the cabbage in the boiling water and cook for about 5 minutes. Carefully peel off the outer leaves as they become pliable. Continue until you have 12-15 large leaves. Set aside to cool.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and dried thyme. Mix until well combined.
  3. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Add the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
  4. Assemble the Rolls:
    • Lay a cabbage leaf flat on a cutting board. Place about 2-3 tablespoons of the meat mixture in the center of the leaf.
    • Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling and roll up tightly from the stem end to the outer edge. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
  5. Bake the Rolls:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce in the bottom of a large baking dish.
    • Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in the dish. Pour the remaining tomato sauce over the top of the rolls.
    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the meat is cooked through.
  6. Serve:
    • Let the cabbage rolls cool slightly before serving. Enjoy hot, with extra sauce spooned over the top.
